COBALT GLASS ROLLING PIN NORTHUMBERLAND SAILING SHIP DATED 1874
Lot Details
380mm long, glass rolling pin in cobalt blue, has ‘Forget Me Not’ hand painted on it, along with two sailing ships named "Northumberland" and dated '74, one end is open pontiled (for salt), Rare & Interesting part of shipping history, wear to the script and decorations, Very Good 8/10 A very interesting item of Nautical History, 2 theories as to it's origins Version 1 A vessel called the Northumberland was built in 1871 and records show it sailed tor Melbourne in 1874, and was wrecked in Napier in 1877 Version 2 The painting on the rolling pin is very crude but appears to show a ship with similar lines, e.g. bow and stern, to those on the transfer prints in the attached picture, a ship much earlier than the "Northumberland" which was wrecked at Napier in 1874. Suggesting that the rolling pin depicts the 74 gun Royal Navy ship and dates from circa 1830-1850 https://www.sunderlandpottery.com/northumberland-74.html
