Richmond 24th November 1878 The British steam ship was sunk off Finisterre. Belonging to Messrs Dixon and Harris of London. The Steamship had arrived in Penarth and had taken on 1233 tons of South Wales Coal and left the dock on the 19th November. On the 22nd a storm had forced the ship to cease the engines and battened down the hatches. The ship continued on its way on the 23rd but a devastating explosion ruptured the ship on the 24th. Ocean Coal had loaded the coal and the Foreman Trimmer Jenkins Lewis gave evidence that if the hatches had been reopened the gas that had accumulated would have been released. The Captain was suspended for six months.
